In this subject, students will examine: the meaning and value of privacy from a variety of theoretical perspectives; the historical development of legal privacy protections; the nature and scope of existing frameworks of privacy law in Australia, comprised of a complex mix of both common law and statute; the practical operation of such frameworks in contrast to other comparable jurisdictions; and the interrelationship between law and technology in the pursuit of privacy protection.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of this subject, students will be able to:
1.
Describe key principles of privacy law in Australia and comparable jurisdictions, demonstrating an understanding of their historical development;
2.
Critically examine and assess the effectiveness of these legal principles, with reference to existing theories and emerging issues relating to privacy;
3.
Identify, analyse and apply these legal principles to generate solutions to legal problems relating to privacy;
4.
Demonstrate in-depth knowledge, advanced research skills, and effective communication skills, in critically analysing the issues and challenges of regulating privacy prompted in particular by new technologies.
